Are the GM factory replacement gears any good? I found a performance shop that quoted me $225 for labor on a gear replacement but they said they only install GM gears. Would I be better off using an after market gear and paying for more for labor at another shop? Thanks in advance! Oh by the way I will be upgrading to a 3.73.

Motive gears are GM....I think. Check out Thunder racing or tbyrne.

The $337.83 price is what my local dealer's computer shows to be their cost on them. I have noticed that most of gmpartsdirect's prices are what my dealer's cost is when I compare. I think they get $17 shipping for them. I pay 10% over cost plus tax at my local dealer so I usually buy from them.
I happened to pick up a new set pretty cheap on another board's classifieds. I had an opportunity to compare them with a new set of GM Motive 3.73's a couple of weeks ago. They are not the same. I don't know if the GM's are better, but they are not the same. I have had good luck with the GM Motives too.

Why would the GM gears be any better than an aftermarket gear like strange or richmond? You would think a company that specializes in gears would know more about them to make them better versus a company that deals with the entire car. Just wondering.

GM doesn't manufacture their own gears. Like most all their parts, they are made by a contractor. Supposedly, they gave to meet tighter specs to be accepted by GM. I know from working for Western Electric / AT&T / Lucent, electronic parts we use had to meet tighter tolerences than ordinary. Many times, we were forced to buy large lots of components, and test and only use the ones that met Bell Labs specs.

Every manufacturer in a sense tries to make the product as bad(=cheap) as possible while still meeting the given specs. You can easily understand that GM has more to risk than aftermarket providers.
