Default How loud is a 9" supposed to be?

I bought a 98 SS that had a Moser 9 inch rear end with 3.70 gears. When im going down the highway it SCREAMS... the loud obnoxious gear whine. It is suposed to sound like this? Would replacing the ring and pinon make it any more quiet? Thanks for the help.

Luke

Mine is very quiet. The only sound I get is a slight whine on deceleration. It sounds like yours it setup wrong.

thanks for the help! I am probably going to get the gears and seals replaced on it pretty soon. Hopefully that fixes it.

I have had several different setups in my 9".

Shane, have you tried a few launches on slicks?

My gears always get louder.

If your gears are air-raid siren loud, they need to be checked out...

I get above normal whine from 55mph to 125mph, but it's for me it's acceptable.

If you have it rebuilt, make sure a competent shop does it. If they don't install the bearings correctly, it will cause the same ear-drum splitting scream.
