Yeah, but plenty of 12 second cars, including A4's, have broken rears. I broke one in a 13 second (maybe) g-body on a 1-2 shift. If he is talking about just doing it for one event then he might be fine, but that is a lot of money for something temporary.

The whole housing would be a rear axle assembly, unless it was an IRS. The carrier is also the differential. Many people do refer to them as the "rear diff", but the housing itself is not the diff. If it has a spool in it it cannot differentiate wheel speed from one side to the other, thereby making it not a differential by deffinition.
Also, the caps and name calling isnt really neccesary.

IT'S STILL CALLED A DIFFERENTIAL EVEN IF IT HAS A SPOOL AND IS NOT PERFORMING IT'S INTENDED FUNCTION. "REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY" IS ALSO ACCEPTABLE. TECHNICALLY, IT IS A CARRIER INSIDE THE HOUSING. SINCE WE'RE OFF TOPIC, WE MIGHT AS WELL ARGUE "POSI" VS. LIMITED SLIP.

You Mean Like The Fact That "posi" Is Just Gm's Brand Name And Auburns, Eatons, Etc Are All Limited Slips. Or Are You Going To Say There Is A Difference? That A Trak-lock, Traction-lok, Sur-grip, Etc Are All Somehow Different.

I have been researching this for my 3rd gen, and it just doesn't seem to be worth it. For the 7.5 10bolt there are only mini spools as stated before which only work in open carriers they tie the axles togather blah blah blah... Well mini spools work with 26 spline axles (28 spline being stock) so you'll have to buy new axles. Also several manufactures recommend getting c-clip eliminators and an install kit. This starts to add up real quick for a rear that like aslo said before is on borrowed time. You're better off just spending a little extra and getting a 9'' or a 12 bolt which are near bulletproof.
