trans-am nut - I'm having the EXACT same problems as you're describing. I'm going to pull the differential cover off this weekend and see if I can see the problem and if I can't pinpoint the problem I'm just going to buy 2 new axles and replace all the bearings. Let me know if you find anything out on yours

Good luck hopefully you see the prob. I listened to the driverside while it was jacked up and in seconed gear, and there is a noise in the driver side I'm not digging around again till I figure out exactly what's goin on.

Did you find anything out when you pulled the cover?

I ended up just ordering new axles, bearings, and seals and replacing those. I had a lot of metal shavings on the magnet inside the cover also. We found out the problem was the rotor had warped and so over time it eventually affected the bearing and put a groove in the axle. After the new axles the sound was quieter but still there so once I get my new rotors on today the sound should be completely gone. I'll let you know how it goes though.

I had my family mechanic drive and listen to my problem. He thinks most of my noise is coming from the ring & pinion, and doesn't think it's a very bad issue because my hatch is very open (I don't have the sail & speaker panels & carpet & ttop holders and all that), so that's one of the reasons why I hear it more than I should.

I had the same problem with my old 10 bolt. I just replaced the axles and the problem was fixed.

Just an update - I replaced both axles, axle bearings/seals, rear end fluid, and rotors and the sound is still there. I jacked the car up, took the wheels and brakes off and turned the axles by hand. As I turn them I can hear a pulsating, 'grinding' type sound which I'm pretty certain is my problem...now if only I could figure out what is causing it

I'm saving for a 9 in. but I would like to know what was goin on. I also heard it could be the crush sleeve. Has anyone had any experience with this? and what would cause that to go bad? Thanks

Saving for a new rear is a smart thing to do !! It is a waste of money to start dumping it in a 10 bolt especially if your a manual car . Just my opionion and half the people on this site lol.

I think I'm going to take my car to a local shop and have them see if they can diagnose the problem.

I had the same symtoms... and when I opened up the rear... there were chunks of pinion lying in the bottom. Good luck
