12 bolt noise

Default 12 bolt noise

At first, I noticed the pinion seal on my moser 12 bolt (eaton posi, 4.30 gears) was leaking, so I took it to a reputable shop to have it replaced. After tearing it apart, the shop told me the bearings were gone and that I needed a new set of gears and bearing kit. After they completed the repairs I noticed a significant whining noise in 5th and 6th gear from 40-70mph under normal acceleration, so I took it back. The shop told me that my driveshaft was too long and had never been shortened during the installation of the 12 bolt, so they sent the driveshaft off to be shortened and balanced. I got the car back and the noise was louder, so they replaced the gears and bearings with the theory that the driveshaft being too long set a wear pattern into the gears which caused the noise. This time I get the car back and there is no noise, but a week later I start to hear the same whining, not as loud, but the same whining noise. I have driven the car 147 miles, mostly highway, haven't launched it or done anything but drive it.

Its a moser 12 bolt chevy rear end in a 2001 Camaro z28 t56 with stock (shortened) driveshaft, non-adjustable edlebrock torque arm, slp adjustable panhard bar, lowered 1 inch, and it has 285 street tires out back.

Wtf could this noise be? I called moser and the guy on the phone told me that using a crush sleeve with 6 speeds causes the gears to move out of shim sometimes. Then I called the shop and found out the gears were ordered from moser so I called the same dude at moser and he said, "moser gear sets are not sent with crush sleeves."

I think you should have contacted whoever you bought that rear end from first to have them get it fixed, you may have voided your warranty.

I purchased the car with the rear end installed and its been a couple years. As far as warranty....from moser?

Anyone have any idea what the noise could be? I am guessing they couldve put too little preload on the pinion and now it has moved, but I have little experience with pinion preload. I guess I can check the gear contact pattern.

NON adjustible tq may be the issue, who knows what your pinion angle is, I had mine set to -2, the noise I have has been constant since day 1, I recently had a differental issue where its not unlocking as I turn, which sucks. I wonder why you dont notice it in all gears, just higher ones, maybe its due to exhaust noise.

Yeah I can only hear differential noise in high gears due to exhaust noise. Car has 1 5/8 dynatech LT headers and 2.5 exhaust pipes that go into 4" single outlet mufflex spintech catback right before the differential.

im sure then your getting gear noise at all 6ears not just the upper ones. Your just so much lower in the rpms now you can hear it.
