Ok, does anyone have a 9" or 12 bolt in an F-body where the noise is tolerable? My Moser 9" sounds like one of those old air raid sirens and the noise gets louder the more load it is under.
I sent the third member back to Moser once, and the guy I talked to then said they switched the U.S. gearset to a Richmond gearset, and they replaced the bearings. When I put it back in, after about 75 miles, the noise came back. I called back and talked with someone else, and he said that there was nothing in the notes about changing to a Richmond gearset.
The guy also told me that putting an aftermarket rear in an F-body was guaranteed to make noise, there was no way around it.
I know I should expect some noise, but I can barely hold a conversation and my ears are almost ringing when I get out of my car. You can even hear the noise if you are standing on the side of the street when I pass by.
I have had some people tell me that it is possible to get one that is quiet and others that say you can't.
Do I need to go to a 12 bolt? Is it possible to have one that is tolerable?
Any opinions appreciated, sorry this was so long.
Thanks,
Kevin

The problem is that you're having Moser set up the gears. You'd think they would know what they're doing, but I know of lots of folks that could never get a quiet set up from Moser.
I have Richmond 4.33 gears in my Moser 9" and they are dead quiet, even after the horrible abuse I've put them through. They were set up by a shop here in Florida.

GeorgeC,
Did you get your 9" from Moser? Did you have to buy a new gearset?
Thanks for the information,
Kevin

I had the same experience as George, and I returned my Moser 9" centersection and installed a used third member from a mid 9 second car and i was pretty quiet.

I bought a Moser 12 Bolt with 4.30 gears from Raging Motorsports. It was drop shipped from Moser to me. I had it installed by my mechanic. My rear end is dead quiet. It makes no noise at all. I was running a 10 bolt with 4.10's and it whining really loud.
I know the more you race on your rear end the louder it will get, but I already have about 15 passes on my new rear and its still perfectly quiet.

Another trick is to stay away from poly mounted control arms. My Strange was quiet till I added poly/poly control arms.

Since I can't leave anything alone, I've also had 3.50, 4.11, and the current 4.33's in it. The current gears were bought new and installed by a competent shop and remain quiet after ~1.5 years.
