Default Question about changing wheel studs

Hey guys,

My first night out with slicks and I managed to break a wheel stud while trying to take the slicks off the following morning. I've got a Strange Dana S60, 4-channel backing plates (3-channel ABS and 3-channel rear end), and the stock size (12mm x 1.5 pitch x 1.75" length) wheel studs. I'm going to replace the stud with the same size.

I've taken the wheel off, and the only way I see to get at the wheel studs is through the hole where the ABS sensor goes in these 4-channel backing plates, but it doesn't look like there's any way I'm going to get a socket in there on those hex heads. So, I have the following questions for you...

1) This is the most important one to me... do I have to take the axles out to get at these damn things, or is there an easier way?
2) What studs do you guys recommend? I don't want to spend the money on ARPs since there appears to be holes for 1/2" studs in the wheel hubs. I'll upgrade eventually, but I'm currently trying to minimize the cost. Summit has some studs made by Gorilla that look like a good buy price-wise.
3) Am I to assume that since there is a hex head on these things that they're screw-in and not press-in studs?

Thanks in advance everyone. I sure hope I can get this all figured out by this weekend! I've got some guys at work talking trash about LS1s, and I need to show up and wipe the floor with 'em.

No, you DO NOT have to take to axle out to get the studs out. And after I broke ALL 5 of mine at once and did a donut at the startline, I HIGHLY recommend you get ARP's. I thought the Moser studs with my rear-end would work but they cost me a lot of money after that accident and I am really surprized that happened for a $2400 rear-end. First, rotate the axle until the desired stud you want to come out is lined up with the hole located in the brake plate behind the top of the axle, then use a hammer and punch to knock it out from the front, but not so hard you break it! Do the same thing the reverse way when you put one in. Hope this helps; it worked for me!!

According to what I've heard, my studs are not press-in but screw-in. Therefore, I can't hammer them out, and I guarantee that I can't fit a socket through the hole where the ABS sensor goes that will fit on the bolt heads. Is there another way to go about it?

I got determined last night and went out in the garage and just figured it out. Here's what I learned:

1) The studs are screw-in, not press-in.
2) The hub has holes pre-drilled for 1/2" studs.
3) The backing plates have to be removed to get at the studs, but you don't need to pull the axles out more than a few inches to get the studs out.

Anyone recommend a brand of hardened screw-in axle studs?
