Default Tru trac, posi, spool

Hey guys!! im new to this whole rear end stuff and im about to purchase a 9inch for my car. I know that a spool is for a full race car and i still want my car as a daily driver but its going to see alot of track time also!! so i wanted to know whats the difference between a posi and a tr-trac? and what would be the best chice? also are there any threads/stickies that go into detail about the components of a rear end? Thanks alot guys! i tried a search but it always times out on me!

Spool "locks" the rearend, ( like a solid axle). When you drive it on the street the inside tire will chirp in turns as it tries to keep up with the outside tire. Tough on tires and axles but very, very strong. I have never driven a Tru-Trac but they get a lot of good reviews here. I have a locker in my 9 inch, not quite as strong as a spool but not as street friendly as a Tru-Trac either. My car is not a DD but it is street driven...

Thanks alot guys!!! also correct me if im wrong but someone told me that a true trac only makes 1 wheel spin!! (like negative traction) he said that if i smoked the tires only one of them will leave a mark and the other rear tire just follows it!! is thir true or should i pop this fooo in the face? thanks again fellas

True. But thats what I do when I am out on the street, running around racin.

My car won't see more than 2 to 3 thousand miles a year (if I can get a few days off work) but yeah I will probably go through a set of DRs in that 3 thousand miles.

You know its bad when your happy you got 3k from a set of tires.

SSmoked, the trutrac shouldnt be spinning one tire. There is a thread right above this one talking about that. It should lay down to prettly equal length black marks.

I wouldn't buy a trutrac.. buddy of mine with just bolton power had one of those things break already, my chassis guy has sen a 1/2 dozen break recently.. those things apparently aren't any better or might be worse IMO then a regular posi. At least a regular posi can be rebuilt, that trutrac thing is a sealed unit.

If it's a racecar, spool it and forget it, if it's a street car get a posi unit.

Hardcore street car, spool it

locker will be annlying when you back up, the clicking and whatnot is obnoxious, but if you can't tolerate a spool on the street it is the only option out there that will take the power you're planning on making.

Yeah, I was going to ask how much power you'll be making. NA you'll be fine, but your spray #'s are going to be approaching spool territory to keep things from shredding.

I do love my TrueTrac so far. Definitely leaves two black marks of equal length I'm making 420rwhp or so through it and plan on spraying a 125 shot this year without worrying about breaking anything.

Its wheel hop that kills those diff, im the one with the bolt on car that did it. With my moser, you have to get new axles to change posi's if for example you wanted to go to an Eaton to Trutrac or vice versa, its really sucks. My new unit seems fine, drives good. Went to the track, no issues, yet....

Are lockers only anoying when you back up? or do they just naturally have alot of gear noise? DAMN!!!! The thing is that i still want to have a good conversation with whoever is in the car with me, so i dont want gear noise!!, but i also dont want to pop this thing eighther!!!

I cut a few very low 1.5x 60's and a 1.47 60' in my full weight car with my Tru Trac, i dont think its that weak. The 9in version is stronger than the 12 bolt version from what ive heard.

My Tru Trac leaves two marks everytime. Unlike my Eaton posi's (i had 2 of them) which left me with one tire spinning during my burnouts quite often.

I highly doubt you'll break the TruTrac, and on the street, it will be infinitely better than a spool or a locker

Its not necessarily the gear noise which will be the problem, its the cunking while it locks and unlocks and they sometimes unlock at inopportune times.

Ive never had a locker but my 2000 SS has a spool and I hate it. Makes it hard to make the tight turn into my driveway and make right hand turns on the street. I have a True track in my 81 and love it. Going to get one for the SS this week since I think I need new gears anyway.
