Default 3:42 to 3:73

I have a 98 camaro ss with the m6. My rear is whining real bad and am going to need some new gears. Will I notice a difference going from 3:42 to 3:73. I do alot of highway driving. I really want the 4:10's but Im not sure if they will hold up with my driving. I only go to the track once or twice a year and run street tires. Let me know what you guys think

Most guys that go from 3.42 to a 3.73 wind up wishing they did 4.10's. The amount of change is relatively small. The good news is that mileage won't change a whole lot. I'd not suggest the swap just for the gear, but since you are going to need replacements anyway....it is not such a bad thing to do the 3.73's. Get some other opinions as well....good luck!

I personally think the T-56 F-bods should have come with 3.73s from the factory. There is a noticeable diff over 3.42's but it is not huge. Mileage really does not change, and my speedo is only off like 2-3 MPH, so it is not a big change. That being said the clutch engages better, and it pulls noticeably harder in first. Not to the point that 1st is worthless (spinning), but it pulls harder. I have heard that the 3.73s are also quite a bit stronger than the 4.10s. I will have to say that if your car is going to stay in "bolt-on" power levels and you go to the track frequently 4.10s are probably your best bet, otherwise 3.73s are nice.

I'm not for sure the difference between 3.73 and 3.42s but I just got a new rear with 4.10s and the RPM difference is about 200-300RPMs. I drove to DFW to get it installed and on the way back I did not notice a MPG difference. I know there is some but nothing to worry about. It took the same amount of gas to get down there as it did back. there is a big difference in 4.10s from 3.42s, world of difference. I love it and so happy I did this.
