Trying to understand a gear conversion. . . I want to convert from my stock 2.73 to a 3.42 or 3.73 gear. I also want to put a 3200 torque converter in. I know that the gearing has to be done first. Can somebody tell me what has to be done. I hear around that I have to buy a completely new rear end because of the small size of the 2.73. I'm new to this part of the car, can someone point me in the right direction? I appreciate the help.
Re: Trying to understand a gear conversion. . . You will need a 3.42 or a 3.23 for a "2 series carrier". It is a thicker gear to fit the differential that your 2.73's came on. Then just have it installed and set up correctly.
Re: Trying to understand a gear conversion. . . or you may be able to pick up the 3 series carrier on here with some standard 3 series gears as well. you definitely dont need a whole rear end.. at most a new carrier, which is the posi unit, holds the ring gear between the axles..
i didnt have any luck with 2 series 3.73's in my 95 formula as far as noise.
also you dont HAVE to do the gears first. i dont uderstand that part.

Re: Trying to understand a gear conversion. . . yeah, u don't NEED new gears, just make sure u get a converter with at least a 2.5str, so it won't feel loose... a vig 2800 is a good choice... by keeping ur gears, u keep ur low rpm cruising and good highway mileage...
