As long as the gears are done and setup by someone with lots of experience with our cars and setup properly than ur rear end will be just fine. the stock tune will be fine, the only thing that needs to be adjusted will be the speedo, but thats a simple fix and only takes 5 minutes if u have access to a programer or have friends that have them for ur year. mine hums alittle but that because the shims arent "perfectly placed" But i was thier and did the install with 2 very expereinced f-body guys, so i know it was done right. Mine are motive, which are a popular brand because of thier price and quality. Richmonds are strong but will make noise but they say thats normal for how they cut thier gears. ive already been to the track on sticky tires and beaten on mine! Most of the sponsors sell various brands.

Oh and if ur an auto, i would say go 3.90, thats what i did and couldnt be happier or imagine going through that trouble for a smaller gear.

The rear should be ok with 3.73's. With a vette you are more likely to break the output shaft before you'd break the gears anyway. If you do not retune for the new gears your speedometer will be off.

It would probably be in your best interest to merely do an exchange... vice an R&P swap. That... and it would save you a whole bunch of headache, not to mention money.

The 8.25" gears run about an average of $385.00 and are available through a few different manufacturers. Now you'll need to find someone qualified to do the build and then add on the R&R and set-up costs.

Look up RPM Transmissions. They can help aleviate most of your soon-to-be headache.

from what i heard from a couple buddies who did a 3.23 to 3.73 swap, there was not a noticable difference.
