Default Differential question

Noticed when starting out or slowing down that the drive shaft rotates back & forth a couple of degrees while in gear. Only in a start moving & coast in gear or slowing while in gear. Am thinking it's differential related. Jacked up the car & grabbed the drive shaft while in neutral. Can feel the input pinion & ring gear engage within thousandths in either direction (normal clearance). After engagement, I can rotate the drive shaft 2 to 4 degrees either direction before the wheels sart to turn. Is this normal differential clutch slippage? This movement is also what is felt when starting &/or coasting in gear. Although, the drive shaft rotates back & forth much faster. Fast enough that the car is jerky & I immediately depress the clutch pedal to disconnect the diff from the engine. Am thinking that maybe the diff springs have weakened &/or a pinion gear backing cone has an issue. Am not sure & would appreciate your input.

What type of Differential are you using?
LS6 In a Miata now that has got to be some acceleration there.

I would say that is normal . I am basing this off the normal clearances between the spider and side case pinions with in the Eaton differential.
Have you had the back cover off for inspection yet ?

No, am hoping to hold off 'till Winter as long as it's not an issue. What about a Detroit locker true trac? I've seen two types, one that states 100% power to both wheels & one that is considered their more standard Detroit locker true trac Design. Would it react the same relative to the internal clearances or are the tolerances tighter? Am told that the Detroit locker is a nice upgrade performance wise & if it also reduces the slight flutter in the drive shaft (as described above), maybe it could be a good alternative?

A locker has way more slop then you would probably like. I have ran one for in different cars for over 20 years . It is a love hate affair with it.

A Trutrac is just like a Torsen . I have been running that one since jun/ jul 07 . I love the damn thing.

Glad to hear it. The Trutrac is a bit less expensive as well. Thanks, I think I just found a Winter project. Your input has been very helpful & is greatly appreciated.
