Default 10 Bolt Chatter, Fluid level/Type? Question?

I changed the fluid in the stock 10 bolt and I hear a "chatter" coming from the rear between slow shifts and while turning hard right. I did use the 4 ounces of GM limited slip additive along with Mobil 1 75w90. My question is, Should I put more of the GM additive in it or should I dump the whole thing and use Mobil 1 75w140 with the GM additive as well. Thanks in advance for any help and or advise...........

Are you sure the previous owner did not change the diff from a Torsen T2 to an Auburn or Eaton?? If it's still a T2 in there, you should not need ANY friction modifier, and there may be other problems. I've NEVER heard of "chatter" in a worm gear/Torsen type diff, but i guess anything's possible.
Maybe chicane, or some of our other resident diff experts will comment on this??

Some would say you should do that even if you had no problems (especially in a 10 bolt)!!

You really need to correctly verify exactly which differential you have... before you go on an spend (eg: waste) any more money than necessary.

If you dont see any clutch plates... my money is on that it is an Auburn limited slip. Torsens dont really chatter, so to speak... so Ill leave that out of the equation for now. But an Auburn, or an Eaton will... if there is no (or not enough) friction modifier. Even if the fluid itself comes with friction modifier in it.

But... 99% of the time, when you change the differential fluid and you pick up a chatter, howling or popping when turning... its due to a lack of friction modifier or not enough of it. You will not pick up chatter when accelerating in a straight line thou... that kinda has me puzzled... but in the turns, it is totally suspect.

I... would squirt another 2oz or so into the differential to start off with. If that doesnt work... add the last 2oz. If THAT... doesnt work, I would use something other than Mobile1 for fluid. I have never... had to use more than about 4-6oz in a passenger car differential... but have had to in DANA60's and/or larger differentials due to their fluid capacity.

And yes... I too... will recommend the use of a 75/85-140... as a standard for performance use.

Thank you very much for the speedy response and helpful advise. I may as well change it again next week and use the 75w140 this time and try 6 oz. of the GM additive. Thanks again and I will post with the results.....

Also if I take a pic, and post it, of the rear with the cover off can you tell what kind of setup it is? Thanks....

Dont put in more than what is necessary. If you change to the 75/140 only put in 4oz. If it needs more you can always add... but never subtract any amount.
