calculating driveshaft length
calculating driveshaft length Ok so im putting a th400 w/ 9'' tailshaft in w/ a stock rear end.
now stock driveshaft length is 40.5''
4l60e length is about 31''
th400 length is about 34''
from the stock dimensions that equals 71.5''
31+40.5=71.5
now for the th400 couldnt i just use
34+X=71.5 which is of course 37.5''
now going off that how accurate is that? I dont really feel like putting the th400 up in there just to figure out what I already can figure out on paper.
What sizes DS have you ordered for a th400 swap with stock rear end? should I just get one 2'' shorter?

one way to measure for a shaft is to jack the rear up as it would be sitting at ride height, then measure from the rear seal of trans to the center of rear u-joint. take that measurement to the shop. they can figure out the slip it needs from there.
another way to measure for a driveshaft if you have the slip yoke. put the yoke all the way in till it bottoms out, then pull it back out 3/4-1 inch then measure from center of where the ujoint should be to the center of the rear yoke.then you have center to center of u-joint.i worked for a driveline shop, made many shafts. the rear end has to be at ride height also.
If we are supplying you with transmission slip yoke, pinion yoke and driveshaft yoke measure Dim W.
If we are supplying you with transmission slip yoke and driveshaft measure Dim X.
2 Piece driveshafts use Dim Y + Z.
