Default 9" or 12 bolt........

Well, its time to decide on a rearend, and I can't decide if I want a 12 bolt or a 9". Here are the pros and cons of each, let me hear your opinions... I can do both for about the same price, so $$$ is not an issue.

9" Pros
Stronger than 12 bolt
More available gear ratios
35 spline axles

9" Cons:
Heavier than 12 bolt (Does anyone know how much?)
Less efficient than 10 or 12 bolt
Limited posi choices (this being said, I'll probably run a spool, so it may not be an issue)

12 bolt Pros:
More efficient than 9"
Lighter than 9"
More posi alternatives than 9" (see above)
It's a GM rearend, and I always think of it as more of a "streetable" rearend

12 bolt Cons:
Not as strong as 9"

What are your opinions on both? I have had two Moser 9" rearends, and have had minor problems with both (probably more related to the nature of a "racing" rearend than the quality of the rearend)

if your drag racing you'd be crazy not to go with the 9", its stronger, if you can get the 12 bolt for alot less money then go with that! both great rear ends, but c'mon dude, the 9" is stronger, that should be the deciding facter right there!

What types of problems did you have before with the Moser 9?

Just had problems with leaky pinion seals, gear whine, etc. Like I said, nothing major, just little annoyances, a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Yep, those are pretty minor, and expect to have those probs with a 12 bolt, too. I have a Randy's R&P pinion seal and yoke, and it doesn't leak a drop. My 3.89 gears whined pretty good, too, until I took it to an experienced gear shop. Dead quiet now, even after MAJOR track and street abuse.

one of the biggest difference will end up being the 9 inch has a quik change gearing and the 12 bolt does not, the strength is about the same when a stronger stud girddle is installed on the 12 bolt, no one i know has really had an issue with a 12 bolt i run one in my 383 ci 69 camaro and have no problems at all
then there is also the fact that you are putting in ford parts
i just couldn't bring myself to it

I'd get the 9" for drag racing and the 12 bolt for a car that rarely sees the strip.

9" has it's warts but 12 bolt guys break a lot more often.

I thought there were more diff options for the 9" and I know they are also used alot more in roadracing than the 12 bolt....

I don't think anyone makes a 9" that supports 3 channel ABS though
