Default (newbie) gearing

Hi new here I have 1998 firebird a4 3.23. What gains would I SEE going with 3.55 or 373. Would I need speedo, and abs calibration can dealer do this. Would you get GM gears or aftermarket, how hard is it to install / set them up yourself.

Do NOT, I repeat, Do NOT set them up yourself if you've never done gears before, there very trickey and you'll probably screw up the whole thing, in your case you should probably take it to a local mechanic that has experience and have him do it, go with at least the 3.73's, you'll notice a big difference, and as far as companies, there are only a few that make gears but a whole bunch that distributers, shop around for best price, I'm sure the sponsors to the right can help with that!

u will need the computer reprogrammed for the gear change, dealer can't do that, so u will need a HPP, predator, or LS1 edit... but a high stall converter will give u much more of a performance gain...

just running on stock tires won't a converter just spin my tires. 16" wheels not alot I can do as far as wider tires is there. This is my everyday car in spring and summer. what do you think, From what I hear a converter will hurt more than help on stock tires.

Ah but you can go wider. I've heard of people putting as big as 315s in the back without any issues. You can always go and get some drag radials to take care of the wheel spin problem.

3.23 to 3.73 will be marginal at best seat of pants if i were you id stick with 3.23 i mean personally im happy with 3.42 but theres like almost no diff between 3.23 and 3.42 and besides all that ur not gonna run quicker qtrs with gears alone but the geras just set up better to run quicker once you start making power from other mods like a new cam. if your looking for nice gains then do a converter and tranny cooler or a ls6 intake both of those you will actually feel
