i appreciate all the replys / opinions. its a tuff decision for me since adding a quality part that costs 3k but doesnt add any value to the resale price of my car (not that i'm selling anytime soon). hearing your replys reminds me of back in high school i had a 74 GTO and at first i kept sticking in junk yard engines which kept breaking. the finally had a speed shop build a budget 455 which ran great (under 5k rpms). i'll check around for any local shops that have some expeirience with 10 bolts, but if its going to cost more than 1k i'll save for a year or 2 and pop for the 12 bolt. THANKS EVERYONE!

Ok.

Weld the tubes to the center = $50
Straighten housing after the tubes being welded = $150
Aftermarket axles = $250-800
Posi, locker, spool = $250-500
4130 yoke = $189
Solid crush sleeve = $35
Gearset = $200
Cryo gearset = +$350
Micro gearset = +$250
Useless "TA" cover = $150
ARP studs for main caps = $45
Steel billet main cap = $65

That equals $2259. So do you think a 9" or a 12bolt makes sense now ??

Now you for not having a sense of humor.

I can't believe how retarded some of you guys are. He doesn't have a 700rwhp M6 turbo car that he drives around on the street with slicks. HE ALMOST NEVER RACES THE FU@KING CAR!! He's not gonna break his 10 bolt cruising around on the street in a near stock A4 car that he ALMOST NEVER RACES.

Are you his father or something?
It looks like there are enough opinions and facts here and in some links put up. He should be able to read through it all and make a desicion on his own.

Fu@k it, just go spend $3000 on a 12 bolt. Maybe my 10 bolt is some experimental titanium factory freak rear. I can't believe all you 13 second A4 f@gs are breaking your rears on the street, maybe your cars make more torque than mine...

If you want to save money buy Stranges S60, it is stronger than the 12 bolt or 9" and costs less than either however it weighs slightly more, but is also more efficient due to better pinion placement in reference to the ring gear and in my opinion would offset the weight with less power loss.

As far as "building up" a 10 bolt, it really doesn't matter what posi or axles you place inside this rear end. The small gear set is the weak link and there is nothing you can do to improve the strength of that.

OK, everyone who owns an f-body (even V6's) should throw their 10 bolts into a garbage heap, and pony up the cash for a 12 bolt/9"/S60 regardless of whether or not you race your vehicle. Thank you.

Dont use any $$$ beefing it up. Put money aside incase it does break, but i wouldnt buy one unless the 10bolt broke. On street tires and not racing, chances are pretty low.

I've broke a 10 bolt on street tires more than once, put any power or shock this gear set good and it is going to break teeth off of the pinion or ring gear.

I agree with the other member, trash can that rear end and get a 12 bolt, 9" or S60.

I'm an A4 car and I have had it for the past 4 years. my first car and im 20 now. the rear-end is still the stock one from when it was bought at the dealership. I ran 3:73 for a year and a half and i dog- the hell out of the car 121k miles on it now im full bolt-ons and the most ive ever had to replace is bearings. Do 10-bolts suck.... No. Can they handle power....No. you can't expect much from a rearend that was ment for a v-6 S-10. And wheel hop can be fixed with proper suspension.

last year i built my 10 bolt: moser 28 spline axles, eaton posi, richmond gears, lpw cover and the welded tubes. it probly would have lasted forever if i didnt race it. first night at the track i bent the housing and the axles were rubbing on the tubes. i had$1000 into that gutted it and sold it for $850. just bought a moser 12 bolt richmond gears, moser spool, and 33 spline moser axles with a t/a cover. i have been to the track numerous times and it still is running strong. spent $3000 on this one after getting brakes and driveshaft made. if your not going to race it at all then a 10 bolt will work fine. as soon as you start launching it and hooking its gonna break.
