DIFF. SWAP HELP

Default DIFF. SWAP HELP

im going to be swapping my factory locker for an auburn pro, however im not goint to be changing the gear ratio<3.73>. do i have to re-shim the ring gear? i dont see why i would cause it just bolts in, and im not going to even touch the pinion gear. let me know hat you guys think, i could use the help.

well no need to shim the ring gear itself but there may be a difference in the 2 carriers. so once you get everything back in place with the new carrier, check your pattern on the ring gear and you may have to shim the carrier from left to right or right to left, depending on the pattern, the patterning paint should come in the install kit, or you can check it with white out also.

thanks quickenuf: so, i just need to check the side to side clearances, i guess that would make sense since it would make the ring gear either too close or too far from the pinion gear. i want to do this myself, so if anyone else has some more tips that might get me trough this swap safely, please chime in.

you should always start off by replacing the shims in the same places they started at.Are you doing new bearings as well? If so re use your pinion shim. your pinion shim sets where you pinion rides on your ring gear. The shims on the outsides of your carrier bearings sets your back lash. you want between .008-.012 backlash. if your reusing gm gears or got new gm gears[i prefer GM gears to aftermarket] when you do your paint pattern you want to be a little heavy on the heel side for your drive gear side and a litte more to the toe side. for your coast pattern. [inner part of ring gear is toe outter part of ring gear is valled heel] this is oppisite from the normal set up ways but this is where i have had the best luck. do not forget to mark your bearing caps so you know which side and what way they were facing.tourque your pinion to 25 inch pounds then tap on both ends of your pinion then retourque again. take your time and do it right and you'll be happy you did. good luck <img border="0" alt="[burn out]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_burnout.gif" />
