questions on rebuilding 9'' centers
questions on rebuilding 9'' centers So i picked up a bunch of 9'' parts tonight from my buddy. Got them for free. Theres a 3.83 and 4.11 gear set. Both gears look real good and the housings look good too. So now im gonna take all the parts and make one good one. Where can i get a bearing kit for it? And what else would you recomend? New bearing, clean it up and throw it toghter and set lash and what not? Wanna get this toghter good before i move on to the housing. I got 3 yokes and pinion supports to choose from too.

Clean of everything really good with some brake cleaner and make sure the gears have no rust on them. A beaing kit can range from $90-$110 depending on which differential bore and which support you have. Measure everything to make sure you order the correct kit or see if you can get bearing numbers off of the old races. A stock Ford case is good for mid 10's before the caps break and a factory nodular will handle a little more.

Old bearing numbers will be fine, you can als measure the bore where the differential case sits in the carrier. Common sizes are 2.890 or 3.062, either will be fine for a street application. Also see if the pinion bearings are the same size, if not you might have a Daytona pinion support.

Well scott. Heres what i have...
2 yokes... 1 with a u-joint size of 27.2ish mm
1 with a u-joint size of 29ish mm
(from what i could tell from my non-dial caliper)
The 2 cases are different also. The one has a drain hold on the side and has a longer and bigger dia. yoke. The other case has no drain hole.
Thats what i got so far till i get further in bearing size.

The pinion yokes are 1310 on the left and 1330 on the right. I do see some rust on the ring and pinion, might make some noise. Thats just a stock center section and the carrier differential bore should be 2.890.

Verdad Gallardo yea, theres a tad on the gears. I wired wheeled them and got um pretty good. I plan on getting new gears with a new center but ill at least be able to see if i want them gears or smaller ones. Its just a temp. unit for now till i fully see what i want to get. And turns out i got it for free. So what yoke should i use? And i need to get a spool for it cause the spool in it now is 28 spline. But if i get a 31 spline spool, can i reuse it in other centers when i get a aluminum one? What parts are interchangable?

If you plan on getting a new driveshaft then change the yoke over to a 1350 series. If not then I do carry a conversion u-joint for that 1330 series to fit your stock driveshaft. A 31 spline spool will fit either bore case, 2.890 or 3.062. The carrier bearings will need to be changed and that is all.
