Default Changing rear end fluid...

What all do I need and where do I get it? My stock rear end has started to howl a little and I suspect that I need to change the fluid.

Thanks in advance,

put the rear up on stands or ramps. place large catchpan under pumpkin. Loosen all bolts in rear end cover but do not take all the way out. Pry the rear end cover off a liottle bit on the bottom with a flat blade screwdrive so the fluid starts pouring out. Wait a few minutes and then remove the cover completely (two of the bolts in the cover are longer than the rest to accomodate for the brackets that hold the parking brake lines). After cover is off inspect gears for damage and clean out any remaining fluid that is left in there. Check the magnet on the cover to see if there's any big chunks of metal on it. then clean the cover off and get any gasket material off of it as well as the rear end too. You can either buy a new gasket from GM or just run a bead of red RTV sealant around the cover and then bolt the cover back on. on the passenger side of the rear end about 3/4 of the way up there is a fill plug screwed into the rear end. It has a hole that a 3/8 inch ratchet extension will fit into so just use that to loosen it. Add one bottle of GM limited slip additave and then fill the rest of the way up untill the fluid starte oozing out the fill hole a bit. Replace the fill plug and you're done

Thanks for the info. You wouldn't happen to have a part # for the seal would you. The local GM dealer isn't know for its ability to get the correct part.

Anyone recommend a good rearend fluid?

Josh, just run to AutoZone, pick up 2 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil, it's in the back, and ask for a gasket for your car, they'll get it right. Also, get some carburetor cleaner, or brake parts cleaner, and after you've drained your rear-end as much as possible, spray the cleaner in there and clean it all out with paper towels. Only thing is, you'll have to run by the dealership and pick up a bottle of limited slip additive, it's like $7 and they should have it in stock. Call me if you need some help.
