Default Transmission Problem Question

I know this isnt for a chevy but I need help. I have a 46 Ford truck with a new 351W engine. Im not so sure what year the engine is since I didnt put it in. I think the front end is from a newer car. Well the bad thing is that the truck is in a little town in Mexico and they suck at fixing cars. I was driving it one day overthere and since there are high elevations and big hills, It started to smoke alot from what looked like the tranny I raised the hood and smoke came from the dip stick. Well I had some tranny oil and put some in. I drove it a bit till I got home(like 3 US blocks). As I was driving I would press on the pedal and it wouldn't go (like in neutral). I got it home and put it in reverse and it would run normal. When I put it in drive it wouldn't move unless I stomped on the pedal and it would barely move. I went underneath and the oil pan read "Automatic Overdrive - Metric" so I assume it is an AOD tranny but Im not so sure the name of it. Some guy told me it was missing a metal rod from the carburetor(edelbrock e/choke) to the tranny (I assume its like a kickdown-passing gear thingy.)
I need your help!! What should I do to fix it?!

SSVortec350,

The tranny is toast!! <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> The needs a total rebuild not an overhaul. This tranny should have a cable not a metal rod like 70’s model truck with a C-6. This cable on any overdrive is not just a kick down but it also controls line pressure to the tranny clutches. If the cable is not adjusted right or missing then the tranny will burn the clutches.

Kevin S.,

So I am toast. Do I have to change the transmission completely or can it be fixed? Do you know what type of transmission this is so I can get a replacement? Since my truck has a metal rod instead of a cable, can it be replaced with a cable type?

SSVortec350,

Since it said metric overdrive on the pan then it is probably an AOD. An AOD tranny (all of them) should have a cable, not metal rods. The tranny can be rebuilt at any tranny shop. If you do have a metal rod, you should be able to replace it with a cable. You should not have to get a different tranny to make the swap.
