Default Worn rear end bearings??

The rear end makes noise as if the bearings were worn! Ive had 2 people already tell me that they sound worn! How can I make sure they are before I tear everything apart to replace them. Would worn bearings cause more of a chance of breaking the rear? Do you think I should replace the gears since Im gonna have it all apart anyway? If so, do you think 3.73s will be good? Ive heard that with 4.10s and stock tire height, that you will hit 5th in the 1/4 mile, is that true? Will I see any improvements from going from 3.42s to 3.73s? Im going to go ahead and put a T/A cover on it! Will that lessen my chances on breaking the rear? Thanks and any help is much appreciated. By the way, do you recommend me doing anything else if I decide to do this job?

When you get diff. noise it's not good. Usually it's the pinion bearings that cause noise. If ya keep drivin' it it could damage ring & pinion. Maybe time for a 12 bolt??

I would like to put a 12 bolt in, but I dont have the money for it right now! I think Im just going to replace the bearings and maybe the gears. I was thinking of going with 3.73s though, what do you guys think? Thanks and I will leave my signautre so that you can determine if I should go with 3.73s or not.

What else could it be if the rear is making noise? If it were the bearings and it has been for quite some time, do you recommend me doing the ring and pinion too? I wanted to do 4.10s, but from the stories Ive heard, Im thinking of just sticking with 3.73s. Thanks

The car has 50k miles and its a 2000 model SS, the car has only been at the track a few times, but not lately! I do often race it on the road, but for the most, its driven normal. It is a T-56 with 3.42s and Im pushing 365hp to the wheels as of right now and thats with a regular belt, high flow cats, and no cut out. Im sure I could of picked up a few more hp if I would of had a short belt, off-road pipes, and a cutout. I will leave my signature so that you can look at my mods, thanks.

To answer your question about hitting 5th gear on stock size tires is not going to happen. I need to up my rev limiter I was peggin it going through the traps this past weekend in 4th.

I didn't get a T/A girdle, but I changed the Posi because one night I heard the infamous womp womp sound....and needless to say just heard it one time. I did however have something get into a right side bearing and scored it all up on the inside....well now that my whole rear is pretty much new, it gave me 28 great passes on Sat and Sunday and some killer 1.7 60' times and I am happy. BTW, I was launching around 3-3200 each time....worst 60; was 1.9 and happened 2 times the rest were all low to mid 1.8's.

I am also pushing around 355 to the wheels. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I love the 4.10's on the street they are great...highway or at 80+ I see 2K RPM's.....sometimes noisy in 5th but I can take it.

I will however get a 12 bolt when this breaks. If you are changing gears to 3.73's then get the Posi for $99 it's worth it....I got GM Superior gears and they came w/the complete install kit, seals, gasket and bearings.

I race alot so, I expect one day to tear it up, til then I enjoy what I do.

I play I will pay....someday <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

OK, from your mods and driving habits, your not full race, but she not a virgin either. 50K might be pushing it. You didn't mention how or if the tone changes. If you have a few basic tools and think you can handle it. Spend a couple hours Saturday doing the bearings. You'll want to rent a tool to pull the bearing out. It's like a slide hammer with a paddle on the end. The rest is cake. If it's the bearings, for $30-40 bucks a side and some fluid, gear fluid not beer, although it might help, your golden. If the toner changes with speed or on or off the gas. Just go for a rebuild of the 10 bolt if you don't have the cash for the 12. You can get a posi from SLP. I have a 98 with 17,000 miles, 420 hp turning 11.50's. I just rebuild my 10 bolt in Oct. I'm not ready for the 12 either because of low funds. I changed the 3:42 to 4:10 about a year or 1500 miles ago. In Oct. I blow it up at the track. Posi, ring&pinion and a axle. So here's a older car, less miles, more mods, with a little more track time. It's hard to predict when these things are going to happen.

Good Luck!

Does it change tone with speed or under braking? On or off the gas. Or is it the same on matter how fast you go? Do you race? T56 or Auto? you said 3:42's is it and T56? How old is the car?
What mods? What kind for HP you making?

Both Lar's SS and Racer88 told me to get a posi? Well how does that differ from a limited slip? Is the posi for street and strip purposes or for just strip only? If I wanted to get a really nice posi and money wasnt an issue, who makes one? So if I was to do the entire job, I would need gear oil, gaskets, ring and pinion, T/A girdle, stud kit, bearings, seals, a posi and what else would be needed? How is the posi going to benefit me? Are there any disadvantages from going to limited slip to a posi? Do I have to modify anything to put in a posi? Thanks and any help is much appreciated!

Posi is the carrier unit in your car.....for $99 just get one. I did, and it was the best decision to freshen up my abused rear w/ over 120 track passes and hard 2nd gear hits.

Once you break a gear or posi, it's toast....the posi is the main center chunk of the rear besides the gears and bearings.

You can get a set of new gears a(GM Superior) that comes w/ the install kit bearings, seals, etc included for around $300

Your Posi is a Zexel torsen and it limited slip, as to why you need to add the limited slip additive w/ the gear lube.

My car is a 98 like I said above. I had a Auburn cone-type posi in my car. It took alot at stock power and even when I started adding bolt-on Mods. Looking back and reading all the posts and data on 10-bolts, I knew the big "boom" was coming. So for me not having the funds at that time for the 12 bolt and not wanting to live under the fear of another blown unit, I went for the Eaton clutch-type unit. A few more bucks, but worth it for now to me. I called around and most of the companies are about the same on price. I bought the Eaton, gears and rebuilt kit from Reider racing. All in stock, had everything in two days. I could have gone with new stronger axles too, but I am still planning on the 12 bolt this year and didn't want to go that deep with the 10 bolt. Covers you can get anywhere. Another very good Mod.

I had bad bearings (previous owner) and it messed up ring and pinion, had to have that replaced as well.

Worst case, the bearings seize and they lock up the rear then your really in trouble $$$$$.

Just go out and buy the 12 bolt if you plan on racing. It'll save alot of money.

You can buy an Auburn Pro Posi or and Eaton both around the $400 area. Why waste that money on an expensive Posi when you can still break both of em? Or, still break the 10 bolt?

If you are all that worried, don't waste the money on replacing gears and Posi in your 10 bolt...go for the $2120...Tbyrnemotorsports.com is now selling a Strange 12 bolt w/ 33 spline axles for that price.

I replaced my Posi because I heard noises and for $99 why not? I also went w/ new 4.10 gears (Love them) while all was apart being refreshed.

I will however go to a 12 bolt w/ 3.73's after this stuff breaks...but I kept my stocker 3.42's and the old posi which was still good, just had a bearing going bad.

Worst case, I replace my new stuff if I have to w/ the old...and buy an install kit w/ new bearings for $129 to get by til I bite the 12 bolt bullet.

To Racer88: So what are the advantages and disadvantages from going from a limited slip to a posi? You said the one from SLP is only $99? How good is it and what kind of power does it hold up to? So as mentioned before, will I have problems with a posi on turns since it wants both tires to spin at the same pace? Is a posi for track, street, or both? If you say that you love your 4.10s, then how come when you upgrade, youre gonna go with a 3.73? Thanks buddy!

What I replaced by SLP is the same exact Posi unit that my car left the factory with. It's a cheaper way to get by for now vs. buying an expensive Auburn and running that in the stock 10 bolt. I am always adding power and it's just borrowed time that I am gonna be having to buy a 12 bolt.

Seeing I was going to an away track, and heard noises one night locally on our track I felt it was best to change the posi and while at it, add a gear change that is more beneficial on the track. The reason I went 4.10's is I am not cammed heavily yet, infact I have an LS6 cam going in soon. When I get close to 400 RWHP I will probably shatter this rear end....then it will be 12 bolt time.

I will only run 3.73's in the 12 bolt because they seem to be a bit more streetable for traction on the street w/ added power.

There is only one Posi unit your car left GM with....the Zexel Torsen. SLP takes them off and sells them because some Customer's order their SS w/ the Auburn.

So the Zexel Torsen limited slip in the rear as of right now is considered a posi? As stated before, if money wasnt an issue, what would be an awesome posi to go with? Whats the advantage of going from a limited slip, to a posi? Are there any disadvantages? Isnt a posi more for track purposes than street? I say that because doesnt a posi cause the wheels to turn at all times? If so, then when Im making a turn, its going to give me trouble. Couldnt I just upgrade to a better limited slip? Do they even make a good aftermarket one? To Lar's SS: what do you mean by this quote, "It took alot at stock power and even when I started adding bolt-on Mods." Do you think that I should go with 3.73s or 4.10s? Going from 3.42s to 3.73...will it make any difference? Thanks alot guys for all your help!

Im not sure on which posi unit that I have, but if I was to guess, I would say the Zexel. So is the Auburn any better than the one from SLP? So the ones that SLP offers are the Zexels? How much are the Auburns from SLP? So if I do ineed have a Zexel in it as of right now, its a limited slip to my knowledge...would that limited slip unit be considered a posi? I thought a true posi functioned both wheels at the same time all the time. Well thanks again and let me know.

Mine was roaring or howling whatever you want to call it so I changed the axle bearings. Did not make any difference. It is the pinion bearing.
