Speed Sensor, signs of a bad one?

Speed Sensor, signs of a bad one? O.K., here's a weird one. I've had the Yank 4L60 in for about three months and 5000 miles, and it's running pretty good. However, I get this really strange RPM spike at about half throttle. It's anywhere from 100 too 500 rpm when the car shifts into every gear except the 3-4. When I use part throttle, shift is fine, when I go WOT, shifts great. Anything inbetween and I get this spike. I have the stock MAF and I've reset the PCM a couple of times. I also have an SY3500. Could the converter be confusing the SSV? Is this a sign that the SSV may going bad? What the hell is the SSV anyway? Other than the RPM spike, everything with the tranny is fine. The fluid is a nice color and it doesn't smell burnt at all. Help me.
