Auburn carrier differences
Is there anyway to tell which Auburn carrier is posi or non posi? Ive ran across a 3series Auburn carrier (13.42) stamped on ring gear. And I need to know if its posi or non posi. It came from a 95-97 firebird but Im not sure if its the good one or not. The only numbers I could find are 4612825

If it's an Auburn,it means it is posi/limited slip.To the best of my knowledge,Auburn did not/does not manufacture non-posi carriers.
The 13.42 on the gear has nothing to do with the carrier on which it's mounted. The 13.42 is probably the gear ratio(42 divided by 13=3.23).3.23 would indicate it's a 3 series Auburn.

You can tell an Auburn posi the second you see it, they have five small coil springs in the center that preload the side gears. Then look on the ring gear side, you will see the Auburn 'A' cast into it.
To tell if it's worn look at the plates that the springs are in between. There is a tab on each plate that bends toward the center. The more wear on the side gears/case the more gap between these tabs. A good one will have under a .125 gap.
