Installed my AAM gears last night. Pinion shim is stock at .037 and the backlash is set at .004 (per the instructions). My noobie skills tell me the pinion is too deep and I need a thinner pinion shim.
Your thoughts?

At first I had the backlash at .009, and the pattern looked almost exactly the same as it does now (at .004). I'm going to put in a thinner pinion shim and check again. The AAM instructions call for .004 of backlash. Should I stick with that recommendation, or should I loosen them up more for some reason?

Well I ended up going all the way down to a .021 pinion shim to get the pattern high enough on the tooth. I ended up with .006 backlash setting; I will post pics of the pattern later today.

That second pattern attempt looks much better. Check my signature, I went through the exact same thing with AAM gears and also wondered why the back lash was so small. Keep in mind that for any given pinion depth there is a backlash that will give the best pattern. If that occurs and .008" for example that tells you the pinion needs to move even if the pattern looks good.

To my eye you look a little too deep still, just a little.

You want my advice, pay somebody else to do it. I will NEVER do my own gears again. Not when it only costs $200-$300 in labor for a pro to do it....
