How to get front spindles off?
How to get front spindles off? So im tryin to change the front studs on my trans am, I took off the breaks and rotors, and then those 4 bolts that seem to hold on the spindle assembily. I disconnected the ABS, and there are no other bolts holding it on, but it wont budge. Does that black peice that the ABS connects into (probably the ABS sensor) hold the spindle on from the back? I dont wanto try to unscrew it or hit anything too hard because i dont want to break anything. Any help at all would be appriciated.
Take a nice sharp cold chisel and and give it a good solid whack or two on the front side of the spindle at the parting line where the the body of the hub is up against the spindle. That should free it up. If you get a small burr, just take a file and clean up the edge by hand. No big deal. If you pound excessively on the hub itself at the wheel flange you could possibly hurt the bearing.
I used the cold chisel method and it worked fine. An air chisel might be just as effective if you have access to one and don't go crazy with it.
On the re-install, just take some emmry cloth and clean up the hub and spindle surface. The bearing should slip right into the spindle without having to use the bolts to pull it into the spindle.
