Default 9" Question for Rear Specialists!!!!!!!!!

Put my 9" Moser in a few weeks ago and have only 75 - 100 miles on it;

'99 A4 Trans Am w/ 3400 stall
Running 3.89s on a Trac-Loc w/ 85-140 + additive
31 Spline

Preface: I know that there are consequences to modding a car. So please don't take me down that road. I do my own work and have for 20+ years with good results. This is, however, my first Gen III F-Body and first 9".

Situation- Runs quiet for first 10-12 miles then gear noise starts up when oil heats up. Yes, I did the whole heat cycle thing that no one agrees on. Pinion angle set at -2*.

Once it gets heated up, it sounds pretty good at steady, even power (cruise control). Steady and noticable gear whine under power and at deceleration. There is no vibration at all so the rear acts and performs well.

So, my question is: What level of noise is common and "acceptable" under my current conditions? It is not unbearable but need some opinions from EXPERIENCED people on whether I should pull the 3rd member and take it someone to try and reset it before I goes many more miles.

Sorry if my tone comes off as short but if you don't really have anything constructive, please don't comment.

Does anyone have sound clips of gear noise? I imagine it is hard to get good ones.

Thank you

mine was loud as ***** directly from moser. louder than my exhaust, louder than my radio. louder than an underage girl getting rectally violated (uncalled for i know hehe)

after i blew up the pos auburn that came in the car and had a local guy set it up it is significantly more quite. there is still whine but i wouldnt expect any gearset with hundreds of 6k clutch drops to be silent. it is very very livable now

Mine got quiter as it broke in. Also I am told that the gear set itself will cause some whine. There are correctly set gear sets that whine. and incorectly ones that whine more. Who made the gears?

Did you check the gear pattern before you installed the 3rd member? I've installed 4 9" rears from moser and one of them needed to be resetup. Are you sure you have enough fluid in the rear? Also what kind of TA are you running? Some TA's help make more noise than others because of what kind of mounting they use.

I had my fabricator redo the gear set from moser and i have to say that the 9" is the quitest rear I have ever driven in. my last 10 bolts were loud as crap. but on the other hand my buddies 9" is a little loud but runs good. if you can hold a conversation in the car and it holds together i would not be too concerned.

But remember, your car, your confort level, if you feel something is wrong go with your gut instinct.

Well said. I feel that a little gear noise is tolerable. Bob

Thanks for the replies!!

I'm using a UMI trans mounted adjustable torque arm. The pattern looked good before the install and they are Yukon gears. The fluid was full when I installed it but I'd better check it again to be sure. I put in just short of quarts in it plus the additive.

Strange thing is that when I broke it in, I ran it both ways on stands for 10-15 mins. let it cool then did three 10-15 mile easy drives with cool downs. Through all of that, the rear was dead silent. The next drive was ~30 miles. Right around 23 miles the gear noise started. By the time I got to a spot to turn around, at about 26 miles, they were frickin' loud. I stopped a couple of times to let it cool on the way home, which helped some. Parked it and felt the housing and seemed excessively hot.

From then on the noise is always there. Sound normal or did something move or change in the setup? I was way happy at first but now I'm not sure what to think.

Mine is also set at -2 pinion angle with 4.11's in a M6 98 Z28. My gear whine is not any louder than an amp whine from a stereo...I generally can't hear it over the A1000!
