Default Putting oil in 9"?

How have you guys gone about putting oil in your 9"? I installed mine before I put oil in it, and it's near impossible to fill it up..

None of the pumps would work to get it in there.. and I don't know if i managed to get enough in.. It started leaking out of the fill plug REALLY fast, but I only managed to get in maybe 2-2.5 quarts of 80w90 gear oil..

I don't want to start it if there's not enough in there.. but it's pouring out when I open the fill plug..

What do you guys think?

I used a rubber hose attached to the end of a funnel. Same set up as a beer bong. If you're busy doing something else, just pop the hatch and hook a bungee cord to the release mechanism and let it hang...

Yeah that's what we tried.. something like that.. Tried about 4 different methods.. Eventually we got something to work, but it started pouring out after what felt like maybe 2 - 2.5 quarts.. Is that normal?

I REALLY don't want to start it up, and have it mess up because there's not enough oil...

How much did yours take in before it started leaking out?

Mine took almost 3qts before it started to run out of the fill hole, but I'm running a spool so I didn't have to add any additives.

If its running out the fill hole and not filling up the axle tubes it should be fine..

Yeah, it is near impossible when the rear end is in! How did you add one?

And yeah, I talked to a guy from EPP and he said if it's running out, to start it up.. do the break in procedure (jack it up and let it run for a few minutes) then lower it again and check the fluid.

I didn't add any additive to it.. wasn't sure if I was supposed to. I have the trutrac. Maybe add additive after I change the fluid at 500 miles?

Also.. Mine didn't come with the drain plug.. How in the world are you supposed to draing it without one ??

I added a fill plug on the rear of the housing as well as a drain plug on the bottom. I just drilled & tapped a hole, there's plenty of material in the case.....just don't go nuts tightening the plug down.

Oh ok, that looks a LOT easier to fill it up that way.. Do you think it would be safe to drill a drain plug when it's in the car already? I don't wanna drill through and hit something!

Due to the metal shavings I would not drill into the casing. I have a Moser 9 and even with my fill cap off it was super tight regarding clearance. Do you not have a vent tube? If you don't want to break the rear back down just remove the vent and pour it in there.

Ahh! I was actually wondering if I could do it that way or not.. so it is ok to pour it in there? You sure??

But still, how in the world am I supposed to drain out the oil after the 500 mile break-in period?

How big was the hole you drilled for the drain? Do you have a picture of it ? I will probably be doing it this weekend.. don't wanna mess anything up.

And about the metal shavings, it will all be washed out with the gear oil when it comes out, so they won't matter..

I just don't want to drill into the housing and hit something..

It's not that bad putting gear oil in. I actually just had to. hell, the hardest part was getting the drain plug out. Every time i've ever added fluid, I get the plug out, then take the gear oil, put a vaccum hose that barely fits over it snuggly. Then duck tape that bitch on. Get under the car, work the hose into the hole, then squeeze the fluid out of the bottle. Works like a gem! It takes a little while, because that fluid is so thick, but it does work well!

My Fab 9 from Midwest Chassis only took 2.5-2.75qts. I had the driverside rear tire off and it made it really easy to pull the plug with a 24" extention. Plenty of room to get the bottle up there to fill too.
