Draining 9"?
1. Disconnect the driveshaft
2. Unbolt the backing plates
3. Disconnect the Torque Arm
4. Unbolt the 3rd member
These are the major things you need to do to pull the 3rd memeber. Any questions let me know.

99% of the shavings will drop to the ground while drilling for a plug. the rest will be flushed while draining. use a small amount of grease on the tap to catch shavings then, also.
for that matter... have you ever seen a magnetic plug after it has been in a housing for a while? the magnet is always loaded with shavings.
