Question Press needed for plate/ring removal??

when i remove my reluctor rings and backing plates from my stock 10 bolt to send in when purchasing my 12 bolt...do i need to "press" the bearings off to get the plates off....? searched, and seen the question asked, but not answered...
i have seen these at cost installed from 240 to 400 on a new 12 bolt (strange)
but when folks try to sell them used, they dont get much, which makes me wanna save the 240 to 400 and reuse my own. I do not have a press, i understand how to remove the axel and such, but isnt there a bearing in there that would need to come off so the plate/ring can come off???

thanx for the help everyone.

the ring will stay with the axle shaft when removed. the brake assy will stay with the housing. once the axle is removed, a average size prybar can remove the ring with no damage whatsoever. no press needed for removal, but i use one to re-install the ring onto the new axle.
the brake plate becomes the axle bearing retainer on the aftermarket rearends because there are no c-clips. the bearing is now pressed onto the axle shaft instead of in the housing end. this is why you have to have the brake plates installed onto the axle before the bearing gets pressed on.

i heated the rings up with a portable propane torch and then with the studs on the ground had a buddy steady the axle while i worked around the ring with a prybar. eventually it will pop right off there. if you heat it up it is much easier!

You should still use the retainer plates that come with an axle package in addition to the backing plate.
