Default Is a solid pinion spacer worthwhile for a stock 10-bolt??

Going to be upgrading the gears in the 10-bolt and wondering if a solid pinion spacer will do anything for my rear durability. It doesn't cost that much more, but is it worth it?

um, if im not mistaken, all 7.5" ten bolts have solid spacers in them, but then again, maybe it was just mine that did..

anyway, if you're building it, it's a pain in the butt to get the drag set correctly. just one long process of adding and removing shims. but other than that, it's still gonna break

I was under the impression that the Solid Pinion Spacer kit eliminates the crush sleeve when installing the Pinion Shaft gear. After you have to crush a new sleave you will want to try a spacer kit. Just my opion as I have not used the spacer kit but plan on using it in the near future. I have rebuilt diffs before using the crush sleave and the spacer, shim kit sounds to be a better setup for ease of install. I do not think it would make the diff much stronger though. Just my .02 worth

The theory behind a solid pinion spacer is that the crush sleeve acts as a spring when the gears are subjected to a hard launch and eventually could cause pinion bearing preload loss or gear breakage. The spacer just prevents this small amount of gear deflection.

you're right about the CS, but i dont think it's not any easier to install. with a crush sleeve, you just install, torqe the pinion nut and you're done once you check the drag. with a solid setup you have to do this using an old nut, at least 3-10 times (typically a lot more) before you get the drag right. and then install the new nut w/ a BIG impact. it's a booger, but i think it's worth it for a race envoironment. crush sleeves are just fine for daily driver's IMO.

I just installed a solid sleeve this past weekend. It actually made setup easier for me. I was able to get proper preload in 4 tries. Shim selection limits adjustment. I was worried about the final torque down and over crushing a sleeve. No worries with the solid collar.

Here is the best part of the whole deal. I used the POS pinion seal from the install kit. The damn thing leaks!!! I have to remove the seal & replace it. Now I don't have to worry about pinion bearing preload as I would've with a crush sleeve installed. That right there makes it worth it for me. Just my 2 cents...

so is it really worth swithing out? i heard it will keep your rear end from whinning after a few hard launches. i have a couple of friends with 12 bolts that used to be quiet until after a few launches now they whine. my 12 bolt is as quiet as stock should i switch to a solid pinion spacer before i take it to the track?
