Default Is my rear done?

Alright, so I've noticed my rear has been getting worse and worse lately. And I'm wondering if it's on it's last leg. The rear used to howl at around 60mph, under load, and would stop if I got off the gas. I figured it was just because the gear are aftermarket(3.73, not sure on the brand). But lately, they've gotten much worse. Now, they howl very loudly under load, at almost any speed. It's so loud that I can open my windows and turn up the radio, and still easily hear the rear. With the windows up, it's just down right annoying. I haven't noticed the rear or pinion leaking at all. But I'm thinking it has to be either the gears of the pinion....anyone else have any ideas? Any steps I should take to figure out what the issue is?

Also, I should add, if I get off of the throttle, or throw it in neutral, the noise goes away. And under heavy load, the noise seems to go away as well. So, just under normal cruising do I get the noise. But, almost at any speed. Like I said, I used to only get it at about 60-65mph.

Details on the car. 00 Formula T56, stock rear except 3.73 gears. Car has a blower, makes about 470 to the wheels, obviously depending on the day.

Thanks

This is what happened to me about 4 days before my 10 bolt went. Start getting ready to order a new rear as with 470rwhp you are going to need it. When this happened to me I babied it for about 5 days, then just said screw it, took it out on the street and the first time I got on it the 10 bolt said bye bye . I had 3.73's also, mine were Richmonds. The only difference is that my rear was leaking pretty bad, not to the point were it was dripping but the whole bottom half of it was covered in fluid.

Just be happy that 10 bolt lasted as long as it did for you.

yup its your rear. I had the same problem last year and had my rear rebuilt with motive 3.73's. The whine will deffinantly go down but with aftermarket gears you will always have some whine.

If the noise bothers you then rebuild it. Otherwise it ain't broke. My 10 bolt screamed so I sold it and bought a 12 bolt. Now my 12 bolt screams like mad after some track passes. I just ignore it.

Well, the strange thing is, is it never used to make any noise, except at about 60mph. And, I have hit the gas a few times, and it's still going. Although, I have no idea how much longer. I guess, I will just plan on the rear before the new motor.

I will say, I'm very pleased with the rear so far. The car has been making similar power for about 35K, and it's still going strong....although, like I said I have no idea how much longer it will last. Also, I never drag race the car, the car is setup for the road course, so that's the main abuse the car sees.
