burning gears?

today on the freeway i could smell the smell of a burning clutch from my car.
I get off the freeyway and the smell pretty much went away, but you can tell something was burning. I pop the hood and it didnt smell bad, but it seems like the smell is coming from the back of the car. If for some reason i have no fluid in the diff. would it smell like a burning clutch?? hope i didnt fry the gears

oh and my car is a A4 and the smell was only bad on the freeway.

Converters going bad? They will get very hot and even start to glow when they get clogged.

burnt brakes and burnt clutch smell the same........ Check brakes........

Perhaps e-brake/etc is hung up.

Low fluid in rear end won't make it smell like clutch. Gear oil or lack there of has a horrible **** smell all of its own.
