Default Deposits on New Camaro

Has anyone here put a deposit on the new camaro? The General Manager of the dealership i was working at when the concept was revealed just told me the other day that i could put a deposit on the first one. Actually, they have 2 deposits, but the day after the concept was revealed, i asked him if i could put one down and he said "not yet" then they accepted two other deposits and i found out about it and told him that that was bullshit, so he said i could put one down and have the first one. I talked to three other dealerships (2 in Utah and 1 in Texas) and they both said that they weren't taking deposits. Have any of y'all put money down for one yet? The only thing that i am having reservations about is how soon after they come out with the camaro are they going to come out with one compete with the shelby gt500. what do y'all think?

I wouldn't do it. You don't even know what the car is going to be like. What if its a 3900 lb cow? And how many of these people putting down "deposits" are actually going to get the car first.

It's funny how dealers are taking money for a car that doesn't even exist yet.
Run far away from any dealer the requires payment now.
I wouldn't give a DIME as a deposit nor to be on a list until you can actually order a car.

Damn straight!

Only way ANY dealer is getting a deposit from me is when I can actually sit down with my salesman and fill out a regular GM order sheet for a car that is actually being offered for sale at that time. Period.

Reminds me of when dealers were taking deposits for the first PT Cruisers. Looking back, could you imaging putting a deposit down on a PT Cruiser? I'll wait for the Camaro's to actually hit the lots...

i dont know here in sacramento dealers started accepting depsits for solstice's and there was a line for that. The people that out down deposits got one from the first wave and had them a good 4-5 months till the rest popped up and even now theyre difficult to find. Its not like the dealer can legally rip you off. I say do it just be cautious. My dad owns a fw dealerships and i can tell you from a dealership POV its just a way of making sure you do what you say so that they don't blow off another potential buyer in case you back out. As far as if the car exists or not i think you'll buy one no matter how they come out. You can do what im going with my G8,im going to lease my first G8 for 18 months or 2 years and then wait for the GXP. if by then the GXP doesnt come out ill just buy out my lease. If it doers come out, ill trade in my gt for the GXP. You can lease the z28 and wait for the ss that way you dont have to wait and in case the ss never happens youre safe-guarded

I'd be pretty wary about putting a deposit down now. Depending on the demand these things could be selling for well above sticker price after they come out, and the dealer might decide he wants to sell the first ones to people willing to pay 5k-10k above sticker.

kinda a waste to have money sit'n around. also if someone of more value than urself wants it. say good friend of the dealership ur not getting the 1st car from the dealer. if any, someone working for the dealer would.

nope i did the same thing went and told the dealer i wanted the first one, the ok'd it put my name down go back a few weeks later and find out they bumped me down for two of their managers. so now i periodically go back and check on them. but i would never give them money until i have the order paperwork stating the info.

That's a pretty bold risk to put money down on a car for we know may be a flop.

I wouldn't put a dollar down untill it's speced out and honestly, as with all cars first year bugs etc, would push me from doing it at all.

Still if you must buy a first year, atleast wait till Chevy starts taking them not joe blow dealer.

the difference between the solstice and camaro is that the solstice is a 20k/year production volume while the camaro will be 100k+.

I wouldnt put a deposit down on anything I couldnt see

I'd have to say, that anyone who puts a deposit on a new Camaro has to be out of thier mind. You got to be kiddin' me. If you're dumb enough to put the money down and get ripped off, then it's your fault only.

How can you put a deposit on a car that dosen't exist yet? No one really knows when tha bastard will really come out.

Wouldn't putting money down on a car you dont know the price of screw up your ability to bargain for a good price? Surely you cant get them to agree on a sale price yet.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm not paying over sticker. If that means I have to wait for six months after they are released, that's fine.

I can't believe someone would put money down on a car that's not going to be delivered in a few weeks. I personally would never put money down unless I'm getting the car that second. What if they say they won't bargain down and they want to sell a $30K car for $35K? Just like with the GTOs and Cobras. Then what? Take the deposit bank and now you officially had your money depreciate at some stealership, while they probably invested it themselves and made a nice % of it. If there was a price sheet and you knew what you were getting and it was a limited production car, then maybe I can see why people would do it. Makes no sense in this situation though.

Stealerships just preying on the dumb. What's new?

If you have already made up your mind that you will buy the Camaro no matter what. Then i would put the money down at a reputable dealer. Do you really think if you sign a contract with a dealer and give them a down payment that you will go back there and your money will be gone forever. This isnt 1910. A major company can not rip you off like that.

No one said that. The problem is that there is no agreement in final price, just a down payment on the first crack at the car. This isn't a limited production vehicle. Why give someone your money instead of investing it in those 2 years? I bet they'll try to sell it at MSRP or over to those that just can't wait to get one.

And about a major company ripping one off. Search for GM and their willingness to do warranty work.
