Solid Roller 440 - Oil Type?
Hi Everyone,
Reaching out to see what everyone is using for oil weight for an aftermarket rotating assembly and top end. I am looking to purchase the Driven Break-In oil and not sure what weight I should look at. What are you aftermarket guys using for weight during break-in and after? Any input would be appreciated!

Bearing clearances will dictate what you need to do here, as they are setup for oil type/viscosity to be used. Having said that, let’s assume that you’ve got a standard .0025” main and rod number, I’d break it in with a Valvoline VR10-30 and then go with a Gibbs LS30 after break in. That’s what I do with my big inch stuff with clearances in the .0025 range.
My clearances were .0027 mains and .0025 rods and I just used Valvoline 5W30 conventional with Lucas zinc additive for the break in period and then the first 3,000-6,000 miles with changes at 2,000 mile intervals. Once I switched over to a full synthetic Redline 5W30 was my choice. I wouldn't recommend this on an engine that has catalyst though because the zinc has been said to clog them up.
