Default Vin question

Can you tell what year your car is by looking at the vin?
I read that 2G1 meens its a 01? mine says that but I know its an 00 becuse I have egr? is what I read correct or incorrect?

the 10th digit in the vin tells you what year it is. for 02 is a 2, 80's thru the 90's gm used the alphabet the 8th tells you what engine you have. hope that helps you.

2G1

2 means canada, 1 would be us, 3 is mexico

G1, the g is for GM 1 is part of the car platform i believe.
