how important is the pcv system??

It allows the built up pressure in the crankcase to vent out. Same thing as breather caps on older cars. They just can't vent to the sky any more so they vent to the intake via a PCV system. PCV: positive crankcase ventilation.

Oil is in the air that goes through the line so yes. It would look like smoke. Worst its gonna do is make a mess of your engine bay. Or if the hose hooks up to the intake after the TB then it would cause a vacuum leak. Is there something wrong with your car?
