Default Lost keyless entry

My keyless entry came apart the other day and I lost the electronics inside. I need a new key fob now. Are all gm openers generic or do I need a certain one? Id like to go on ebay to get it because i know the dealership will be a major rip off. I found an article on how to program it, now I just need to get ahold of the right unit. Are they year specific or the same for all years?

This is for a 97 z/28 btw.

You can use anyone. I just learned this a few days ago. You get the device and hold the lock button while with your key unlocking and locking the driver side door 10 times. It doesn't have to be specific to your car.

Different car models have different remotes. Many cars do use compatable remotes between models. GM will likely want about $100 for a new remote. Do a web search for auto remotes and you will find companies that sell used and universal remotes for $40-75. The owners manual gives instructions for programing a new remote.
