looking for Engine and transmission codes.

looking for Engine and transmission codes. I'm looking for a place where I can find the engine codes for GM vehicles. I have searched all over and cant find one. Something that is like this:
1996 camaro: v6 ___, v8 lt1,
1996 silverado: v6 ___, v8 __whatever they come with.
A page that has the year, what model and engine code. I'm trying to cross reference parts to learn more about how gm cars are laid out. More specs than that if I can find it. Looking for newer cars/trucks like 98 and newer.
Also LTx and LSx specs would be cool too. Transmission codes and specs. I'd like to find out what motors went into what and what the differences are. I searched all over and its probably right infront of my face but I need someone that isnt a noob to point it out to me.
