Tell the shop thanks but no thanks. If the replacement tire is the same brand and style the size difference wil have no consequence. You will get more speed difference going around a sweeping turn on the freeway. The biggest issue will be a traction difference on a slippery surface. If the replacement tire is a different brand and/or style check the circumferences to see how well they match up.

Buy a tire and put it on I have done it and had no problem. Just like most everyone else said it is a scam...Or buy the tire and put the new one one in the front and have pull to one side.

if you look at it like they say, your ABS light would come on when you put a tire with less tread on the front............

dont see that happening, so **** em.

p.s.you have more diff wear with innapropriate tire inflation than tread depth..

also, i had a warranty issue with a broken belt on one of my rear tires, a few summers after i got it. and they replaced it with a brand spanking new F1 (the other one had at the most, half tread) and i deffinately did not hear any such crap from the service manager.....

I have an un-repairable flat rear tire. Tire shop says I cannot replace just 1 rear tire, because the different size between new and half worn will "burn up" my rear differential, due to different wheel speed.

Obviously, I could just put the new tire on the front and it won't matter.

But, I think 2 slightly different sized rear tires is fine with the diff. What's the answer?

Thanks.
That is just unadulterated hog wash, as long as the tire you are replacing is the same size (i.e. 275/40-17 tires) you will have no problem whatsoever.

If you use another size tire (i.e. 275/55-17), it WILL play hell on your ABS system, it will read the rotation as the tires slipping.

The only time you are supposed to change all 4 tires at the same time is on AWD vehicles, and I still can not understand that entire concept.
