I have an 01 T/A WS6 and the only mods are SLP Lid and SLP Loudmouth exhaust. I am thinking about taking the exhaust off right where it starts (where the Loudmouth bolts up to the rest of the factory system) and run it like that just for a few days or so. I just want to make sure that it won't mess anything up, which im pretty sure it won't as a cut-out is pretty much the same. Only reason I ask is because I ran my 3000GT open headers for a few days and people kept telling me it needed backpressure and the valves will float.

If anyone wants to put together a fund for my gas money I'll run my 2002 SS across the country and back with open headers.
Other than the O2 sensor issues the only people running open headers are hardcore racers, thats why you always hear about "hardcore" problems. Sure they had open headers but thats not what caused any problems.
No one is going to convince me that you can run open headers and drive like grandma or even drive normally and it's going to burn up the exhaust valves, it's not for one, and as I said before people don't just run open headers unless their doing some hard driving. So if it were true that open headers cause these problems, we'd never see burnt valves on a stock engine right? NO.

I'm bumping this up because I have a similar question. I am going to install long tubes on my GTO this weekend, but I need the mids fabbed up to meet the headers (Kooks mids are too short for the Pacesetters I'm putting on). I'm going to need to run open headers to my shop where the work will be finished, but my question is should I attach the 02 sensors to the headers while I drive there (30 miles away)? The headers each have an 02 bung after the collector so the fronts will be the only ones I'll be able to hook back up (mids each have one after the cat but won't be on the car until after fabrication is done).
I have heard that you can break an 02 sensor if you have it hooked up to open headers, but if I don't run them won't the car start running poorly? Or will that only happen after driving for a while?
Thanks!

Well, for how long are you gonna drive like that??
When i got my headers installed, i drove from the garage to the muffler shops, only with the front O2s connected, and no problems whatsoever...and that was like a 20-30min drive... it would be LOUD, i scared people walking down the streets just flooring it to 2000rpms one of the best time on my car! haha

Have you ever heard open headers? I don't think you realize how loud they are... I ran my 84 MCSS open headers for an hour drive home, and my ears wouldn't stop ringing for 2 days, I was practically deaf when I shut the car off.

my friend frieddd his 02's after less than 30 miles and now his car sits in the driveway til he buys new ones. why not just get a cutout up there instead of open headers for a few days. then you can be quiet when you need to, loud when you want.
and a 3000gt open headers and an ls1 openn headers are night and day

lmao, so many replies and only a couple even read the OP's first post.
the loudmouth doesnt really make your car quieter than it would if it were off, but it might seem that way since all the sound would be dumped under the car instead of going out the back. it wont hurt anything, not even your 02's, because your factory cats are still in place. try it, i'm sure it might be fun for about 5 min, but you'll want to put the catback back on.

30 miles or about 35 minutes at 55-60mph.
This is what I am afraid of. Basically, I just need to get to the shop on open headers and I'd rather not fry the front 02 sensors on the way there. If I don't put the front 02s in, will my car not make the trip?

a buddy ran his for a while with no problems, wot and all but he was getting a speed density tune so he wasnt worried about o2's at all. i fired mine up during my exhaust install and it sounded mean but didnt want to burn up the new 02's so it was like a few mins at the most. i would say dont do it, why mess with something thats not broken, u just run the risk of messing something up. just my .02

Valve float is a problem with insufficient springs, not open headers. You run the possibility of buring out your O2 sensors though. Throw on a 2 foot pipe to the end of each header and your should be fine till you get your exhaust done.

So if I get some 3" pipe and throw it onto the headers I should be able to run the front 02s without burning them up? I would run without 02s for the 35 min drive, but I'm afraid the car will go into limp mode and I won't be able to get above 20mph, heh.
