sputtering could be from clogged throttle body, maf, and/or filter. with the tach though it seems like it could be electrical perhaps?

I actually dont know because I bought it from a buddy with the heads and cam already done. but yeah the check engine light is on, but it's been on since I bought it because of the wrong Intake manifold on it, the engine is actually from a 2001 Camaro SS, and some dummy took the LS6 intake off and swapped it with one from an earlier model.. do you think this could be causing some kind of effect?

I bet it's a coil pack. My V-6 Bird was doing that and could barely make it up the slightest hills on the highway. Check to see if you have spark at all of your plugs. If one (or more) isn't sparking, it's likely the coil pack(s).

You might want to check the front O2 sensors as well. If the A/F ratio is off that could cause problems that are similar to what you're describing.

NO NO! Don't just go get new ones. Pull one plug at a time and ground it while someone tries to start the car to see if it sparks. If it does, put it back, it and the coil are fine, then try the next plug and so on. If they all spark fine, you have more serious issues likely timing or fuel related ie a clogged fuel filter. If one doesn't spark, inspect the wire and it's connections to insure it's go contact. If all that looks kosher, the coil pack may be bad. Switch that one and another around to make SURE the wire and plug are fine. Then replace the coil pack with a used one from a junk yard to save $$.

I would say before you throw anymore parts at it to get the codes scanned some how. Even if the engine light was on before it will still show all the codes it is throwing. At least you have a starting point. The other idea's given aren't bad but that is where I would start.
