You have to pull the heads. Its a big job if you never done it before. Are the lifters bad?

I changed my lifters by pulling the intake and valve train off. Not sure if you can get to the lifters on LS1's by pulling the intake.

do you have LT headers? sometimes they will make the tick sound louder....also if you have an exhaust leak at your header gaskets, it could sound like ticking lifters. what year is it and how many miles? and what type/weight of oil do you use? just brainstorming other things it may be because it's kind of a pain in the *** to change lifters in these cars. and it costs a decent bit of cash too when all is said and done. but if you're sure that's the problem, there's a great writeup here: http://ls1howto.com/index.php?article=2

just don't worry about all the stuff about the cam, unbolting the radiator, harmonic balancer, or most of the other stuff. if you have any spare cash, it would be a great opportunity to toss in a new set of heads and a cam too. good luck with any way this goes.
