Bad tilt column?

Bad tilt column? An aquaintance noticed a few weeks ago while racing the car that my steering wheel pulls unusually far down and to the left, but will spring back up to the normal position. Dealer service writer could only speculate it was related to the tilt mechanism, but that I'd be looking at ~$450 to pull the column out to see what the issue might be.
Any guesses?

Sounds like the easiest method is to find a low mileage column and move over the lock cylinder instead of repairing my original column.
