Default Anyone have this caliper bolt

Does anyone have the bolt that connects the front brake caliper assembly to the car. It is a big Metric bolt i believe. It goes throw the caliper and the whole in this picture. I painted my brake calipers a while back and i guess i didn't torque it enough and over time it fell out.

Thanks

Take the identical bolt from the bottom. Go to your local fasteneal/napa/whatever. Buy bolt. Reinstall.

You shouldn't drive it, look up fasteners in you'r local yellow pages. They should have just about any bolt you can think of. BTW I had the same bolt fall off on the freeway, you do not want to drive it.

Your local parts stores and hardware stores won't cut it. Those bolts are high-strength. (Noted by the special stamping on the head.) You can get an exact new bolt at any GM dealer. Using the wrong bolt on the brakes is a big safety issue.

The point is, there are two bolts, they are the same size, take the one you have that didn't fall out and match it up with the new bolt.

You really need to take this seriously, can you drive with only the upper bolt in? You're talking about bolts that hold the brakes on what do you think.

At least 9000thss understood what I was trying to get across, lol. I had a LCA bolt fall out on my way to work after I installed new LCA's. GM takes about a week to get anything in so I went to my local fastenal to get a bolt to hold me over until the new one came in. And all auto parts stores carry grade 8 bolts.

I had that bolt fall off on me also, and I was able to pick one up at either autozone or advanced auto parts, I cant remember which they both look the same with their orange lettering.

When I was in school I had a class do a brake job for me, well they didnt tighten down the top bolt all the way, I hit the brakes going 40 (30 sec earlier I had just been going around 100mph) and I hear this loud thunk then a grinding noise, like BAD grinding. The caliper had swung out and was grinding on the inside of my wheel. I was so pissed, I had to rip it apart in a parking lot, I went to orielys I think and got a bolt that was the same length and thread pattern. The only difference was that those bolts have a strength rating of 10.9 from factory, and the bolt I put on was like 8.9 or something. I've driven like that for over a year now with no problems.

I would suggest getting a 10.9 from a dealer and replacing the universal 8.9, but it can get you up and running for awhile.

Good luck

It's definitely a 10.9 grade bolt (hint it says 10.9 on the cap) and you should only replace it with the same grade use loctite on the threads when you reinstall it. Fastenal is good for getting bolts like this.

10.9(metric)=Grade 8 bolt(SAE). It's better to pay attention to how many marks are on the top of the bolt rather than going off of the number on the top of it....

Correct, you should be able to substitute a grade 8 bolt (6 dash marks on the head).

The one I got from autozone or advanced auto parts was acutally a kit specificaly for my calipers, tell the guy at the counter you need a caliper bolt kit or something to that effect and look in the computer for the right one.

Yes, metric 10.9 is the same hardness as SAE grade 8, but no, metric doesn't have the same marks on the top. The OP's metric caliper bolt will say 10.9 and NOT have the SAE markings on it. It is a M12x1.75x40 and 10.9 hardness of course and it looks just like this one that doesn't reside in my front caliper anymore:

The problem with using an SAE grade 8 is of course the thread pitch between metric and SAE is different.

Ha ha, and so is a thread pitch gauge, a ruler, a camera, a spare M12x1.75x40 10.9 F-body front caliper bolt, and LS1Tech! Cheers, dude!

Well, Wikipedia and Google are both good friends of mine though

Think he ordered a bolt for 5 bucks from the dealer and it comes in Monday. Hopefully he loctites that thing in there so it doesn't fall out again.
