Default Alternator Question

Hi
I just recently bought a CS-144 200 amp alternator to replace my failing stock alternator on my 1998 Pontiac Trans Am. Well, the new alternator does not have a hole for the rear-mounting bolt like the stock alternator does. Will this harm anything, has anyone dealt with the CS-144 alternators? Only the three main bolts will fit.

You say ONLY the 3 bolts will fit. There are only 3 bolts. 2 big ones in the front and one smaller one in the rear.

Which 3 main bolts are you talking about that DO fit?

Unless you have a monster stereo system the Pro-Start alternator from PepBoys is all you need. Mine has been working great on my 427ci stroker engine and 1,000 watt amp.

I should have been more clear, there are two main bolts that bolt the alternator up from the front and the rear mount one, mine has the two main front bolt spots but no rear mounting spot.

You should be fine with just the two bolts, the rear one is a pain in the *** anyways

That rear bolt keeps the alternator from tilting under strain from the belt. Look where the two front bolts are, to one side of the alternator, that rear bolt keeps the belt from pulling it towards the crank. I wouldn't do it without all 3.

That's kind of what I was thinking because I think the alternator is moving ever so slightly because I can hear what I think is the alternator fan grinding on the mount bracket?

Thats what will happen, any pulley being off balance can cause damage to your internals, like the crank shaft. And your belt won't last long either.

Have been running mine without a back bolt for years, and yet have had to replace a belt due to those reasons. Thats just my experience with it though
