Whine on the PS pump.

Whine on the PS pump. I have a whine on my pump. Recently had the high pressure line replaced because it was shooting fluid into the fans which in turn sprayed everywhere when the fans came on. I didn't hear a whine when I left (I think...maybe I was happy just to get the hell outta there), but two days later I heard it big time. I bleed the system again with the wheels off the ground etc..but I still hear the whine. The pump I think is working b/c the return line shoots fluid out pretty hard, but I'm no mechanic so something else could be causing that. Someone told me it could be the water pump, but I told him I placed my hand on the PS pump while someone steered and it felt it. Could the water pump send such a strong vibration and the PS pump vibrate also. A whine means the pump is failing or failed. Man I just want to autocross this Saturday and replace the pump the following weekend.

Re: Whine on the PS pump. I am also no mechanic, but from what it sounds like this is your powersteering pump and I'd replace it. I had this happen to one of my cars and replacing it fixed the whine. You have a 98, so it doesn't seem out of the norm for something like this to happen.

Re: Whine on the PS pump. I dont think you are suppose to bleed it. Just fill the resevoir and let the motor run for a minute or two. Check the fluid agian, top off if needed. Start car and turn wheel; stop when you start to hear squeling; let run alittle longer. Turn car off; check fluid level. Repeat that process untill the resevoir stays full. Keep car on ground and removing wheels is not nessesary(sp). Thats the way i did it and it works fine.
