Default Wheel Bearings

I noticed a low hum at speed from the driver side real wheel. I had the wheel bearing replaced a couple of years ago. The hum went away. I now hear the noise again. I've only put 10k on the car since replacing the bearing. Does it need to be replaced already? Or is there something else going on. Any advise is appreciated before I go and pay for the bearing to be replaced again.

Most GM axle bearings ride directly on the axle surface. If old bearing damaged the axle surface, new one won't last. If this is your issue, there are special bearings called "axle savers" that ride on a different, undamaged place on the axle surface, but don't know if they are available for 7.5 diff.

Also, 7.5 cover gaskets block the 2 holes on either side of the case. This reduces lube flow to the axle bearings. I've read GM did this to keep lube in the ham to protect the ring/pinion more. I split the difference and put small notches in the gasket to allow some extra flow to the bearings, but not wide open.

Is this an easy repair to do? Are there any special tools I need?

I've seen 2 bad wheel bearigs in a row out-of-the-box from Advance Auto - all China made parts. Buy from the dealer or NAPA.

I've never done one on an f-body... are they bolt-in or press-in? Anyone know?

Good question. Also, is there a write up on this procedure? I couldn't find it in my Haynes manual.

I got couple of extra wheel bearing assemblies with ABS sensors bolts onto the knuckle using 4 bolts. I'll sell one to you for $40 with shipping. PM me if interested
