Default A/C Kills the engine

So, I have a bit of a problem in our lovely 115 degree heat index here...

Yesterday, my a/c stopped blowing cold air. That isn't the big problem though I don't think. I hooked up a 134a can/gauge to it, i'm not sure if it was high side or low side, it was the only port I could find... right up top on the compressor I believe. (round metal thing)... it was waaaaay into the red.

Today, I tried to turn on my A/C so that I could see if the compressor was engaging and stuff... and i heard it click on... moments later, my car shuts off.

What's wrong? What can I do to fix this? I'd like my a/c to work... my girl doesn't like having the t-tops off. lol... my hair this, my hair that.

What happens when you turn the A/C on while driving?

I've never heard of a compressor clutch engaging causes an engine to stop? Unless your compressor is freezing up inside.

If I turn it on while i'm moving... smoke starts coming from the engine bay and it's obvious that something is putting a huge load on the engine... car shaking and stuff.

Your lower A/C belt is porbably smoking then, the compressor sounds like its seizing.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that.

Any chance of fixing that without replacing the compressor?

No, not if the compressor is bad. Unless its something else that I'm not figuring. But if the clutch engages, then you see smoke while under acceleration, it won't stop the engine but you'll get that smoke from the belt thats buring on the A/C pulley that is not spinning freely. But if its idling, the siezed compressor will easily stop the engine once the clutch engages.

If you have someone turn the A/C "on" while you are looking down at the compressor cluth while idling, you should hear the click when its turned "on" and see the A/C wheel NOT start to spin freely like normal.....the compressor is siezed.
