Default Brights turn themselves off

It's very strange. While driving long distances at night, if I turn on my brights, after a while they often turn themselves off leaving me driving in the darkness. Sometimes they flicker on and off too. What could be causing this? It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be a safety issue. The regular lights don't do this, it's just the brights. I have a 1999 Firebird Trans Am.

I would suspect the dimmer switch in the steering coolumn. If you flip the dimmer switch does it go back to low beams ok? If you go back to high beams does it work or does it take awile for it to fail again?

Yes, it goes back to low beams fine and if I switch the high beams back on after they fail (I have to switch them off then on again) they work for quite some time before failing once more.
